Unveiled, the exhibit, opened its doors in Perth, Australia in collaboration with London’s Victoria and Albert Museum after appearing in Singapore. The exhibit displays wedding gowns from the 1800s up to recent fashion icons Gwen Stefani and Dita Von Teese. The wedding gallery, on display in Perth until March 24, is complete with an optional high tea at the entrance of the exhibition. I had the opportunity to cover the event and to get a sneak peek of the exhibit as one of the first fashion columnists to view and cover the historical fashion collection at the Western Australian Museum.

The wedding time capsule features gowns and wedding accessories dating back to 200 years ago. Gowns and wedding accessories are on display from designers Philip Treacy, Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, Vera Wang, Christian Louboutin, Lanvin, Christian Lacroix and a contemporary piece at the entrance of the exhibit by Western Australian designer Aurelio Costarella.

Keynote speakers for the launch of the Unveiled 200 Years of Wedding Glamour included CEO Alec Coles, of the Western Australia Museum, and Edwina Ehrman, Curator, of Fashion and Textiles at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

After attending the opening ceremony, I had the opportunity to view the exhibit again. I quickly learned why the color of choice for brides happened to be white. “By the 1820s, wedding dresses made in shades of white and cream were the fashionable choice for young women from well-to-do families, marrying for the first time,” explained Edwina Ehrman.

200 Years of Wedding Glamour showcases the wedding trends of the time period explaining where the veil was actually worn before wearing it over the face, what brides were accustomed to wear on their wedding day under their dress, and a peek at the Lanvin Spring 2008 dress as featured in Sex and the City during CarrieBradshaw’s bridal shoot for Vogue.

The fashionable exhibition is available to view now until March 24 at the Western Australian Museum in Perth, Australia.
